Often referred to as “The Cleanup Crew”, isopods are true assets to almost any reptile environment and setup, even arid! Bioactive setups add to the ascetics of an enclosure for sure, but more importantly, the higher humidity and necessary ‘floor’ environment that isopods (and springtails} need to thrive also encourages a thriving enclosed ecosystem for a wide range of reptile and amphibian species.
Here at The Northern Herper, bioactive enclosures have been set up for many of the New Caledonia geckos – crested, chahoua, gargoyle and Eurydactylode. I haven’t yet, but will in the near future, be adding isopods and springtails to my leachianus geckos’ enclosures as well.
This page will highlight the many different isopods I have onsite, some of which are housed in their own separate enclosures as they are meant for breeding specifically and not as a cleanup crew.
